ShoXC Fight Recap - 4/5/08 round-by-round

ShoXC (Showtime and EliteXC) at Friant, CA at the Table Mountain Casino
April 5, 2008

This is going to be a short blog because we had a short fight night. Every fight ended in the first round! Here's a quick round-by-round recap.

Doug Evans VS. Bao Quach (Catchweight 147)

Round 1:
Evans shoots in sloppily and Quach attempts a guillotine, but fails. Evans, the wrestler, tries to exchange with a Quach, the Muay Thai fighter. Unfortunately for Evans, he left his hands down and Quach KO's him in 55 seconds of the first round.

Bao Quach winner by KO

Matt Lucas VS. Giva "The Arm Collector" Santana (Middleweight 185)

Both fighters are undefeated going into this fight.

Round 1:
The fight begins with a low kick by Santana, but Lucas quickly gets the takedown. Lucas dishes out a little ground and pound, but Santana appears to be the one in control of the fight from the bottom. No major damage is done to Santana and the ref stands them up with 2 minutes to go in the first round. Lucas pushes Santana up against the cage and then he rocks Santana with a left. Immediately after that left, Lucas hands out an even bigger left that sends Santana to the ground, and it is looking very bad for Santana. Lucas takes advantage of the damage that he's done and jumps on Santana, but ends up in full guard. Suddenly, from the bottom, Santana rolls and gets the arm bar at 4:49 in round one and it becomes blatantly obvious why Giva Santana is called "The Arm Collector"!

Giva Santana winner by submission

Shayna "Queen of Spades" Baszler VS. Keiko "Tama Chan" Tamai (Special Attraction Women's Bout 140)

Baszler comes out wearing a guitar and Tamai comes out wearing this multi-colored circus suit. Are we looking at an MMA bout, or is this the WWE?

Round 1:
In the opening seconds of round one, Tamai comes out with a superman punch and a takedown attempt, but Baszler gets Tamai's back instantly. Both fighters get up and gain their composure and start slugging it out. Suddenly Baszler gets Tamai's back again, but this time she suplexes her. Baszler gets some hooks in but then changes it up for some GnP as she is mounted from the rear of Tamai. Baszler attempts a rear naked choke, but when that doesn't work out she gives Tamai a neck crank and Tamai quickly taps. Despite the beginning theatrics of pro wrestling, this turned out to be the most exciting fight of the night as Baszler gets her 11th consecutive submission victory at 2:05 of round one.

Shayna Baszler winner by submission

Fabricio Camoes vs. Joe Camacho (Lightweight 160)

Both Camoes and Camacho are BJJ black belts, so I thought that this might end up as a chess match. But this is MMA where anything can happen, and it usually does.

Round 1:
Fabricio gets the takedown early against Camacho. Camacho fights like mad from his back, delivering some good elbows and then Camacho attempts an arm bar but fails. Camoes starts to work Camacho with punches and Camacho struggles like mad to get into a better position. Fabricio's ground and pound proves to be too much for Camacho and the referee stops the fight.

Fabricio Camoes winner by TKO

Jared Hamman VS. Po'ai Suganuma (Light Heavyweight 205 - Main Event)

Suganuma gets an overhand right and follows up with a flying knee that drops Hamman to the ground, all within 15 seconds of the first round. All of a sudden the ref jumps in and stops the fight. Hamman is in disbelief and is asking, "what just happened?" In the replays you could see Hamman bouncing back and trying to get up. This had to be one of the most controversial stoppages that I have witnessed. As Suganuma is interviewed post-fight, his voice is overshadowed by strong boos from the crowd. Even though things didn't go Hamman's way, he took his loss like a man and said that he is going to go back to training.

Po'ai Suganuma winner by KO
